What is Caftan?

The kaftans worn by the Ottoman sultans constitute one of the most splendid collections of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. Some of them were so precious that they were given as rewards to important dignitaries and victorious generals during elaborate religious festivals (see the "khalat" article). Kaftans[1] were often embroidered on the front and on the sleeves, but like everything else under the Ottomans, there was a strict hierarchical order in the colours, patterns, ribbons and buttons, which were chosen according to the rank of the person to whom they were presented. While in the 14th century large patterns and subdued colours were used, these became both smaller and brighter in the next century. Palestinian derwish wearing a striped kaftan in 1913 By the second half of the 17th century, the most precious fabrics were those with 'yollu': vertical stripes with various embroideries and small patterns, the so-called "Selimiye" fabrics. Most fabrics were manufactured in Istanbul and Bursa, but some came from as far as Venice, Genoa, Persia, India and even China. Each had very specific characteristics and was named accordingly: there was velvet, aba, bürümcük, canfes, gatma, gezi, diba, hatayi, kutnu, kemha, seraser, serenk, zerbaft , tafta and many others; the most often used colours were 'China blue', 'Turkish red', violet, "pişmis ayva" or cooked quince, and saffron yellow. Impressed by the detailed handwork and unique design, I purchased my first piece from Sukran several years ago as a gift. Since then, a number of family and friends have been the lucky and appreciative recipients of her work, which I would characterize as bohemian-elegant. The technique is traditional Ottoman crochet, meaning you won't find anything like it this side of the Bosporus (and not much on that side either). Moreover, they're light and comfortable to wear (I am told), requiring a sacrifice of neither form or function. Tesekkur Sukran!

I saw your jewelry this morning at the Saturday Morning Market and almost bought an exquisite necklace as a gift. Your jewelry was so stunning and unusual that I, finally, could not buy for somebody else what I myself found so personal and beautiful. (If either one of us lived here in Florida, I would have bought it, and if she didn't like it as much as I, she could have chosen something else, but we both live in California and I couldn't see how she might appreciate your soulful work through a website.) A year and a half ago I was visiting my daughter who lives in Tampa when we came to the green market in Ybor City. I bought one of your necklaces and absolutely love it. It is so comfortable to wear and goes with everything. To this day, every time I wear it, someone stops me and compliments me about it. Many have asked where they could purchase one for themselves. Now that we have found you again, I will pass on your name and number. My daughter just bought me a second necklace for my birthday, and it is just as beautiful.

I saw one of your peices on one of my clients who is a nurse. Immediately I asked her where she bought it. I took a trip to St. Martin recently and it reminded me of a very expensive necklace I saw there. I am looking forward to visiting one of your booths in the near future to purchase something. I really believe you should go national with this as they are amazingly beautiful. You have a true talent for jewelry and I know my client said every time she wears your jewelry someone asks her where she purchased it.
