Caftan Show

The kaftans worn by the Ottoman sultans constitute one of the most splendid collections of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. Some of them were so precious that they were given as rewards to important dignitaries and victorious generals during elaborate religious festivals (see the "khalat" article).

Kaftans[1] were often embroidered on the front and on the sleeves, but like everything else under the Ottomans, there was a strict hierarchical order in the colours, patterns, ribbons and buttons, which were chosen according to the rank of the person to whom they were presented.
While in the 14th century large patterns and subdued colours were used, these became both smaller and brighter in the next century.

Palestinian derwish wearing a striped kaftan in 1913
By the second half of the 17th century, the most precious fabrics were those with 'yollu': vertical stripes with various embroideries and small patterns, the so-called "Selimiye" fabrics.
Most fabrics were manufactured in Istanbul and Bursa, but some came from as far as Venice, Genoa, Persia, India and even China. Each had very specific characteristics and was named accordingly: there was velvet, aba, bürümcük, canfes, gatma, gezi, diba, hatayi, kutnu, kemha, seraser, serenk, zerbaft , tafta and many others; the most often used colours were 'China blue', 'Turkish red', violet, "pişmis ayva" or cooked quince, and saffron yellow.
The Topkapı Museum, Istanbul, possesses a large collection of Turkish kaftans and textiles.[2]

Handmade Lace Large Heart Ring

Earlier, I mentioned crocheting hearts...As I was crocheting I came up with an idea to crochet together two hearts creating a three dimensional heart ring. I started with very fine sterling silver wire and embellished the hearts with an abundance of lilac, honeysuckle pink and antique gold vintage seed beads. One side has AAA grade fresh water pearls on a lace motif with real japanese embroidery silver thread. The other side of the heart is divided in two halves. One half being made of antique gold seed beads and the other half being made of a bordered of lilac and honeysuckle seed beads. The ring rest on the third side and is connected to a sterling silver hand forged adjustable band......The hearts measures 1.75 inches(4.5 cm)
It is a very unusual yet feminine piece....

My Metalwork Designs

I love to work with metal such as sterling silver and copper to create unique pieces.
I like to add texture to my pieces by handstamped or handrolled techniques and I like the contrast between copper and silver. After finishing the piece I like to give it a patina treatment to see details and variety of colors...

I would define my metal designs as abstract..
Here are few picture of my metalwork. You caan find my metalworks on my second shop at Etsy/skaan

Textile materials create unique designs

Being in the textile industry for many years I've had the good fortune to be able to collect many different types of fabric. I am always looking and collecting different textile materials. I wanted to create designs using variety of these textures. So I shaped green organza into the shape of pedals and layered them, onto a pad of cotton. In the middle of the pedals I placed an oval shaped black cotton with rhinestones and my handmade lace motifs with a cranberry colored diamond cut crystal... Connected these piece on a velvet ribbon...And the ends of the ribbon are embellished with the same black cotton with rhinestones...
You'll be able to wrap around your rest several times with this elegant velvet ribbon.
It seems to have quite a Victorian look
I hope you enjoy this gorgeous design...

Recently I've been crocheting hearts and I would like to share this pattern with you.I believe this can be use in many different places....For example for your Valentines gift wrap, scrapbooking, birthday cards. This crochet heart can be used for all occasions..
This is the pattern:
Ch(chain stitch)tr(triple crochet)dc(double crochet)
4 ch,3 tr into first chain,3 dc, 1 ch,1 tr, 1 ch, 3 dc, 3 tr, 3 ch into center
I would love to see the finish product on my blogspot or Facebook. If you have a hard time I will explain it on my Fb with a video and you can also find it on google. I plan to use this heart in some of my upcoming designs you'll be able to see more pictures..

The weekend is fast approching and I wish everyone can have a great one...

Romance and Ruffles

first picture from left is Christian Louboutin
second picture on the right top is from houseinrose blogspot
third picture on the left at the bottom line is from blogbridesmaid
fourth picture on the right at the bottom line is from

Where would romance be without ruffles?
My view is that ruffles are an essential part of romance in textiles. I see ruffles as sensual innocence. Ruffles leave sexuality as a mystery. It doesn't matter where the ruffles are they speak of understated excitement. Even in nature we find ruffles such as the rose. Roses come in many colors but the ruffle of the pedals give it a certain meaning..
I chose these items for my collection to show how diverse and sensual ruffles can be.
If you have different vision, I would love you to share with me....

Women in Power

I have two pictures of two beautiful, powerful women in the history to share with their wedding dress and short life stories.

Queen Victoria who introduced the concept of a "white wedding" to the world. White has long been accepted as the traditional color of the wedding dress, but wedding gowns were not always white. Most weddings at that time were more colorful. The wedding dress was a practical garment, expected to be worn again on many occasions. Queen Victoria's choice of a white wedding gown was unusual not only for a bride but also for a monarch. The marriage of Queen Victoria to her cousin Albert of Saxe- Coburg in 1840 Victoria’s dress was of rich white satin, trimmed with orange flower blossoms. The headdress was a wreath of orange flower blossoms, and over this a beautiful veil of Honiton lace, worn down. By the 1890’s almost every woman could realize her dream of being married in a “new” wedding dress.

Queen Soraya
with Shah Reza 1953 who was wife of King Amanullah Khan of Afghanistan; as Queen she was an outspoken feminist leader. Soraya Esfandiary Bakhtiary 'the princess with a sad eyes' was the first wife of former Iranian Shah Reza Pahlavi. She was beautiful and glamurous, still she couldn't give to Shah so wanted children and the marriage had to end. This one happens to be one of the most romantic and sad royal love stories of the past century. They say their love never died despite the fact that they was forced to devorce.

She bacame a prominent member of high society. She died, by some sources - from the broken heart, in Paris.

I feel so rich to share with you theese two powerful, beautiful women in love

Japanese Gold Thread with my Handmade Lace Jewelry Design

Just the few days ago I oredered very interesting threads. This threads are used in ancient Egypt, Iron Age Northern Europe and Zhou Dynasty China. Examples of surviving Chinese chain stitch embroidery worked in silk thread have been dated to the Warring States period (5th-3rd century BC)
I will feature theese threads in my handmade lace jewelry design as theese threads have been used for centuries to embroider beautiful artwork. My reason for using Japanese gold thread it keeps its luster for generations. Unlike %2 gold thread which will tarnish overtime. This is why I leave the choice of threads to my clients discreation for their custom order.
I also like to mention the piece I just finished it is a turquoise colored lace design in which I fused an abstract element of technique which is wire wrap. This is a lovely combination of vintage and contemporary.

La vie en Rose lace pendant

La Vie en Rose (French pronunciation: [la vi ɑ̃ ʁoz], literally Life in Pink; released in France as La Môme, referring to Piaf's nickname "La Môme Piaf," meaning "The Little Sparrow") is a 2007 French biographical film about the life of French chanteuse Édith Piaf co-written and directed by Olivier Dahan. Marion Cotillard stars as Piaf. The title La Vie en Rose comes from Piaf's signature song. The film won five Césars, including one for Best Actress, and Cotillard won an Academy Award for her performance, marking the first time an Oscar had been given for a French-language role. She is also the first French actress to win a Comedy or Musical Golden Globe for a foreign language role. It also became the first French film to win more than one Oscar; the other being for Makeup.

It was a perfect idea almost a 3 weeks ago to watch this beautiful movie and especially to listen Edith Piaf's unforgetable songs. Around that time I already started to design some parts of my jewelry. After few days later this movie still had its affect on me. And every part came together as harmoniously as does the little Sparrov's music.
I hope you will have the harmonies week that I haved
Warmest Regards
